Project Update (May 18, 2021)
We are on schedule for a late July/early August Grand Opening! Several additional loads of base stone were delivered this past weekend to ensure proper drainage on the courts. Please be aware that once the surface is installed, it will need to cure for up to 30 days before it is painted. Pauses in work are intentional and built into the construction schedule to ensure surface quality, longevity, and proper installation. Barring any significant increase in rain events, we are on schedule to open the new facility in late July/early August!

As always, if you have any questions or concerns at any time, you may contact the Community Park District's Executive Director - Jessica Cannaday at 708-354-4580.

Memorial Park Multi-Use Court Project Details

On September 14, the Community Park District Board of Park Commissioners voted to move forward with an exciting new project designed to bring expanded FREE fitness and recreational opportunities to the residents of La Grange Park. The Memorial Park Multi-Use Court Renovation project will include the installation of a state-of-the-art outdoor fitness court, three pickleball courts, Ga-Ga Ball Pit, Tether Ball, mini race track and more. Download the full plan here.

Funding
This project has been made possible in part due to a generous $25,000 donation from Strive 4 Fitness and a $30,000 grant from the National Fitness Campaign. On Monday, October 12, The Community Park District held a public hearing for the issuance of $325,000 in non-referendum general obligation bonds to further fund the project. The Park District has set a goal to raise and additional $50,000 to support this project Donations would fund tennis court resurfacing, pickleball fencing, fence repairs, and landscaping improvements. Help support this project today!

What is a National Fitness Court?

The Fitness Court is the nation's most innovative outdoor gym. It was designed by the National Fitness campaign to provide a seven-movement, seven-minute system that allows you to use your own body weight to get the perfect workout. This new outdoor facility will be free for the community to use. Support the fitness court by purchasing a Strive 4 Fitness Punch Card or Boot Camp Pass!

What is Pickleball?

Pickleball is the fastest growing sport in America! Combining elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis, Pickleball is a low-impact and amazing activity for all ages. The Community Park District's multi-use court will feature 3 new pickleball courts and benches.

The spacious courts will have access to the existing court lighting, providing extended hours of play at a premiere location! Click here to support this project today!

What is Ga-Ga Ball?
Gaga is a fast-paced, high energy sport played in an octagonal pit and the more players the better. The game is played with a soft foam ball, and combines the skills of dodging, striking, running, and jumping, while trying to hit opponents with a ball below the knees. Players need to keep moving to avoid getting hit by the ball.

The rules are fun and easy- and everyone gets a serious workout. It's super simple. Players and one ball enter the pit. This is an everyone for him/herself experience; if the ball touches you below the knee, you're out. The last one in the pit wins. Then, everyone hops back in for the next round. Games last no more than five minutes. It's fast, it's sweaty and really addictive. As soon as you get out, you can't wait to hop back in. That's why they're all talking about it!

What else is included in this project?
Accessibility
We are working with SEASPAR, our special recreation association, to ensure that all people, regardless of age or ability will have improved access to free fitness opportunities in La Grange Park.

Race Track and Fitness Walk
A mini-race track and fitness walk will be painted on the asphalt surface for all ages to enjoy!

Tether Ball
Tether Ball is back in La Grange Park! This traditional "old school" playground game requires speed, athleticism and strategy to hit the ball around the pole for a win.

Improved Tennis Court Surfacing
Tennis Court resurfacing is included as an alternate bid for this project. Due to the age of the court, a grind and overlay would improve the surface-but would be a short-term fix. We want to bring the court down to the foundation to create the best playing experience possible. Please consider making a donation to help make this part of the project a reality!

Improved Landscaping and More Trees!
The design incorporates deciduous planting beds within the multi-purpose court, reducing the total surface area of the asphalt. This will provide better storm water runoff management and improved natural storm water filtration. It will also provide natural shade and improved air quality for generations! Your donation today will help us install larger trees.

The shrubs along Oak Avenue will be removed and replaced with new native planting beds. This will increase visibility and safety through the park and provide a beautiful waystation for pollinators. Your donation today will help us purchase more established native species for this area.

We would love to recognize you for your support of this project! Call the Community Park District's Executive Director, Jessica Cannaday at 708-354-4580 or email jcannaday@comunityparkdistrict.org to discuss the exciting opportunities that are available!
