FULL TIME Parks and Maintenance Manager

Full Time Exempt
Hiring Range: $45,000-$53,000 DOE + Full Medical Coverage and Comprehensive Benefits Package


SUMMARY 
The Parks and Maintenance Manager oversees the maintenance and repair of six park sites, all park amenities, and structures, and two facilities. The Parks and Maintenance Manager is responsible for directing and executing park and building maintenance operations; horticulture, landscaping, athletic field maintenance, parking lot maintenance, preventative maintenance, building repair, and snow and ice control. 

The Parks and Maintenance Manager works with the Executive Director to plan and coordinate park capital improvement projects for the Community Park District of La Grange Park. 


QUALIFICATIONS A minimum of 4 years experience in park maintenance, park development, and construction management. A Bachelors degree in Parks and Recreation, Horticulture, Forestry or other related fields is desired. Must be familiar with emergency response procedures, read and understand blueprints and electrical schematics. Must be in good physical condition with sufficient strength to lift and hold 50 pounds. Must possess knowledge of computers and have proficient use of Microsoft Office Suite programs, including Excel and Word. The individual in this position must become a Certified Playground Safety Inspector, certified Public Pesticide Applicator or Operator within one year of his/her date of hire. CPR/AED certification is required for all full-time staff. The training will be provided by the park district. A valid Illinois Driver’s License is required. 

SUPERVISOR This position reports to the Executive Director

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Administrative duties include but not limited to recruiting, interviewing, hiring, supervising, evaluating and, disciplining all parks department personnel; training staff in the safe operation of park maintenance machinery and tools; submitting a bi-weekly payroll; communicating with the Executive Director regularly on Park District matters; submitting and managing an annual budget; submitting a monthly status report; developing and implementing an efficient building and grounds maintenance plan; maintaining proper maintenance records; preparing bids for and ordering all vehicles, supplies and equipment in accordance with the District purchasing policy; reviewing, preparing, approving and submitting invoice payment vouchers; maintaining and protecting supplies and other inventory; promoting District activities to community groups; exhibits exceptional customer service.
  • Building and grounds management duties include but not limited to managing and supervising maintenance and development of the District’s flowerbeds, turf, ornamental landscaping, athletic fields, pathways, and parking lots at all parks; overseeing any equipment repairs for the District including but not limited to vehicles and park maintenance equipment; overseeing winter maintenance of District properties including but not limited to, snow and ice removal from parking lots and sidewalks; managing and supervising in-house projects; developing and executing capital equipment and vehicle replacement schedule according District purchasing policy; and acting as the District’s representative to project contractor(s), and monitors the District’s budget for the successful completion of capital projects within the funds appropriated by the Board of Commissioners.   
  • Perform routine park maintenance tasks including but not limited to driving all motorized vehicles, mowing grass (using riding and push mowers), raking grass/leaves, blowing grass/leaves, trimming trees and hauling branches, digging holes, planting foliage, planting sod, hauling and spreading mulch, hauling dirt, weed control (pulling and spraying weeds), maintaining sports fields (dragging and raking fields and filling/raking in areas with bags of turface), hauling and spreading of screening, removing and placement of baseball field fencing, making necessary repairs to playground equipment and grounds, maintaining all court surfaces, shoveling snow, plowing snow, spreading salt, using powered snow removal equipment, installing and maintenance of an outdoor ice rink.
  • Emptying trash cans. 
  • Maintaining park maintenance equipment, including but not limited to small tools and motorized vehicles, changing of park equipment tires, fuel and oil needs, using hoists to repair under equipment, blade sharpening, minor vehicle tune-ups and repairs as needed.
  • Performing basic carpentry, electrical, and plumbing tasks.
  • Set-up and teardown for special events, as assigned, which could include lifting and moving of heavy items

    SECONDARY FUNCTIONS

    • Assists with Park District special events.
    • Attends Park Board meetings, as required.
    • Conducts and attends regular staff meetings.
    • Represents the Park District in various public forums.
    • Attends conferences and workshops to promote knowledge in related areas of responsibility.
    • Must be able to deal with people under stressful and demanding situations.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.
    • General housekeeping to all park buildings, including but not limited to filling in as Recreation Center custodian, painting surfaces and fences, cleaning of gutters and minor roof repairs to all park buildings.


    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS, COMPETENCIES, ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

    • Sitting, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.
    • Perform lifting tasks up to 50 pounds. Loads over 50 pounds must be lifted with mechanical assistance or assistance from others. 
    • General work area is outdoors, with frequent exposure to natural and potentially extreme weather conditions while performing job duties, including extreme heat and cold, snow, rain and ice weather conditions.
    • Exposure to chemicals such as fertilizers, weed killers, pesticides, cleaning solutions, solvents, petroleum products, etc.
    • Exposure to mud, dirt, dust and decaying organic material.
    • A dress code is a must for perception and safety.  Protective clothing and gear, depending on the particular job duty, includes but is not limited to: Earplugs, ear covers, hardhat, respirators, safety goggles/glasses, leather type work boot, protective gloves
    • Capacity to safely operate a variety of maintenance equipment and machinery.
    • Ability to clean, calibrate, make adjustments and perform routine maintenance on equipment.
    • Ability to create and follow a budget, following Park District policies.
    • Ability to follow established Park District safety rules and guidelines.
    • Ability to maintain positive and effective working relationships with fellow workers, patrons and the general public.
    • Capacity to utilize effective time management skills to complete or delegate assigned work.
    • Ability to follow through on projects from beginning to end without immediate supervision.
    • Capacity to solve problems and make project-related decisions. 
    • Ability to safely operate motor vehicles. 

    HOURS The Building and Grounds Manager is an exempt full-time position working a minimum of 40 hours per week. The scheduled work hours for this position are Monday-Friday, 6:00am to 2:00pm, including ½ hour for lunch. The scheduled hours may be subject to change at the discretion of the Executive Director. Evening and weekend hours will be required for emergency maintenance response, snow plowing, or to assist with special events.

    Afternoon Antics Camp Director 

     

    SUMMARY The Afternoon Antics Camp Director is responsible for planning, implementing, leading, supervising both camp sites, and assisting the Afternoon Antics Lead Counselors in the Afternoon Antics Program for children grades in K to 6th. This position provides a warm, nurturing, safe, fun, active, and caring environment where self-concept is enhanced, independence encouraged, and individuality respected. 

     

    QUALIFICATIONS Must be 21 years or older, team-oriented, flexible, have excellent communication skills. CPR, First Aid, and AED certification are required (Park District provides training). Previous experience working with children in a park district, day camp, early childhood, or childcare setting is preferred. Reliable transportation is a must. 

     

    SUPERVISOR This position reports to the Recreation Manager. 

     

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS 

    • Supervise Stone Monroe and Robinhood camp sites. 

    • Assist in preparing and completing activity plans and agency forms. 

    • Plan and organize outdoor activities gearing them to the needs of the assigned group. 

    • Use appropriate and positive discipline. 

    Gathering, loading, setting up and cleaning up equipment and supplies. 

    • Enjoy working with people and foster an environment that contributes to positive self-esteem. 

    • Work closely with Recreation Manager and Antics staff. 

    • Promote a quality loss control/safety program for the Park District.

    Camp Counselor

    Under the supervisor of the Recreation Manager, the Community Park District Camp Counselor is responsible for planning, implementing, leading, supervising, and assisting activities that support the Summer Camp Program for children in grades K-5 in a manner that contributes to their well-being, growth and development. This position provides a warm, nurturing, safe, fun, active, and caring environment where self-concept is enhanced, independence encouraged, and individuality respected.

    QUALIFICATIONS
    Must be 16 years or older, team-oriented, flexible, have excellent communication skills. CPR, First Aid, and AED certification are required (Park District provides training). Previous experience working with children in a park district, day camp, early childhood, or childcare setting is preferred. Reliable transportation is a must.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
    • Verbal and written communication with parents, staff, participants and public.
    • Gathering, loading, transporting, setting up and cleaning up equipment and supplies.
    • Assist in preparing and completing lesson plans and agency forms.
    • Plan and organize indoor and outdoor activities gearing them to the needs of the assigned groups.
    • Use appropriate and positive discipline.
    • Active participation in camp.
    • Assist in maintaining and organizing files and records for the camp.

    Athletic Field Supervisor- Seasonal

    Hourly Pay: $13.00-$15.00 DOE

    QUALIFICATIONS

    Knowledge of athletic field supervision or youth programs/league.

    Knowledge of soccer, baseball, softball, sports training, pickleball and a variety of other sports/activities.

    Experience as a coach or trainer in other sports is preferred, but not required.

    Proficiency in both English and Spanish is desirable, but not required.

    Certification in nationally recognized CPR and Safety instruction (Can be obtained through the CPD)


    SUPERVISOR

    The Athletics Assistant is under the direction of the Superintendent of Recreation and the Executive Director.


    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    • Present a positive attitude and promotes a favorable image for the Community Park District.
    • Effectively maintain timeliness of coaches and referees on both practice and game days.
    • Assist Recreation Manager with providing umpires and captains with proper equipment and updates in a timely manner.
    • Learn and understand the league rules and expected behavior of self, participants, officials and parents.
    • Assists other athletic staff and Recreation manager with setting up/preparing athletic field for practice/games, as well as remove equipment at the end of each practice/game.
    • Assists with overseeing practice and games, distributing and collecting paperwork and equipment
    • Establish and maintain standards of player and parent behavior needed to achieve effective participation.
    • Foster open communication with pa through on-site availability as a liaison for the park district.
    • Maintain regular weekly communication with immediate supervisor and keep him/her up to date on all activities, issues, equipment and financial matters.
    • Must be in compliance with the loss prevention and safety policies of the Park District.
    • Perform other duties as assigned.


    MARGINAL FUNCTIONS

    • Promote athletics registration through distribution of promotional material and word-of-mouth marketing.
    • Keep the facilities clean and all equipment in proper working order.
    • Be aware of league rules and regulations and make sure coaches, referees and umpires abide by them.
    • Inventory supplies and make recommendations on orders to Recreation Manager.
    • Perform other program-related duties as assigned by the Recreation Manager, Assist or serve as an instructor/staff for other recreation and athletics programs when scheduled.


    PHYSICAL DEMANDS, ENVIRONMENTAL/PSYCHOLOGICAL/COGNITIVE REQUIREMENTS

    Must be able to bend, stoop, lift items weighing up to 50 pounds, turn, sit and stand for short or extended periods of time. May be exposed to elements during outdoor activities; including extreme heat and cold, snow, rain, ice, day and night conditions, and high levels of pollen. He/she is exposed to varying levels of humidity, temperature, and light when working indoors. The Athletics Assistant may feel added pressure from being responsible for the entire program and children enrolled Must be able to plan, administer, and evaluate the operation of the youth and adult leagues. Must possess the ability to convey information to others in a clear, concise manner.

    Ready Teddy Preschool is looking for energetic, flexible, and fun substitute teachers! Under the supervision of the Recreation Manager, the Substitute Preschool Teacher is responsible for planning and implementing preschool programs for children ages 2-5 with a co-teacher, including but not limited to providing customer service, general safety, and development, supervision of groups of children, and providing high quality educational and recreational activities.

    The Ready Teddy Preschool substitute teachers are energetic, positive, and patient teachers who love sharing their passion for education with our students. Minimum high school diploma or equivalent with at least two years experience related to childcare or child development required.      Sports Instructors Wanted!

    Under the supervision of the Recreation, Facilities and Safety Manager, the Community Park District Sports Instructors is responsible for developing, planning, implementing, leading, supervising, and assisting instructional athletic programs in La Grange Park. This position provides safe, fun, nurturing, and active programming for kids ages 3-17 where self-concept is enhanced, independence encouraged, and individuality respected. Programming includes private, semiprivate, and group instruction.

    Community Park District sports instructors are energetic, positive, and patient coaches who love sharing their passion for athletics with children experiencing a sport for the first time as well as those looking to improve intermediate or advanced skills. Instructors have coaching experience and a thorough knowledge of at least 2 of the following sports: Baseball, softball, basketball, cheerleading, tennis, volleyball, track, football/flag football, and soccer. Collegiate athletics experience is preferred. Instructors must be 18 years or older, have reliable transportation, be team-oriented, and have excellent communication skills. CPR, First Aid, and AED certifications are required (Park District provides training).
